That’s what a client called to tell me he heard from a billing clerk at a local clinic.
It seems the procedure that was being scheduled cost just under his $2,000 deductible, so he
would be paying all of the cost out of pocket.
I had to remind him that we considered other options at his last renewal. He could have
lowered his deductible by $1,500 but it would have raised his premium by $1,620. We both
agreed those extra dollars looked better in his HSA!
I also had to remind him why most of us buy coverage. If his insurer paid all but $2,000 of a six
figure cancer treatment, would he still think of his coverage as “lousy?”
