Last month, CMS finalized the dates for the 2017 Open Enrollment Period:
- for individuals under age 65, the OEP again this year will be November 1, through January 31, 2017
- for Medicare eligible consumers, the OEP starts October 15th and runs through December 7th
Why on earth am I bringing this up now?
Well, have any of you tried calling your tax preparer in the last few days; still waiting for a call back?
I attended a confab of agents and brokers Friday hosted by one of our health insurers. It’s apparent that many consumers – mostly those under age 65 – will need to reassess (again) their coverage options for January 1 of 2017.
Some insurers will be exiting the market. (Rumor has it there may be a new carrier or two.) Most plans will only offer limited (i.e., narrow) provider networks (presuming to lower costs through integrated care).
Like accountants on April 15th, we expect to be swamped at end of the year. You would be well advised to call your agent soon and book an appointment.
