A client called the other day to tell me about a health care episode. It had started with a hospitalization here in Milwaukee.
Incredibly, on the same date someone with the same name also had similar hospital services, but in Cincinnati. And both patients had the same insurer.
What could go wrong?
Well, the Cincinnati hospital billed first and the claim was promptly paid. Noting the same name and date of service, when the Milwaukee hospital submitted their bill, it was denied as already paid.
My client spent two years trying to fix the matter. Exasperated by collection threats, he persisted in his fight all the way to the hospital president.
I asked him if he ever thought about calling me.
“Could you have helped?” he asked.
I had to bite my tongue.
Forgetting why you buy insurance through an agent: “priceless!”
