Tip 67- Kid Coverage

There is some confusion in Wisconsin about the “limiting age” for dependent children.

  • Prior to the passage of federal health reform, Governor Doyle passed a Bill that required
insurers to cover kids to age 27
  • Then Obamacare was passed; it requires coverage up to age 26
  • Last year, Scott Walker’s team passed a law to bring Wisconsin in sync with Obamacare.

For the most part, insurers began implementing this change for policies renewing after January 1. If your
health or dental plan has yet to renew in 2012, you may still have some “older” kids in your plan.
A 26 year old losing coverage may be eligible for COBRA.
