Tip #415: What’s In Your Medicine Cabinet?

Ted shared a personal story the other day.

His doctor had suggested he try Viagra. Medicare Part D plans do not cover “sexual performance drugs” so when Ted went to the pharmacy, he was shocked to see a bill for $300 for just 6 tablets.

Ted. Ted. Ted. As a Tip reader, you should know GoodRx has coupons for most medicines; I found one for 30 tablets of sildenafil (generic substitute) for $16.14 at a big box pharmacy just up the street.

That got me wondering if coupons might actually be a better ‘deal’ than our insurer’s discounts and or co-pays.

So, here are the top 10 most prescribed drugs and a sampling of GoodRx coupons for each: 1.) Vicodin – 120 10mg tablets for $24.23; 2.)  Simvastatin – 90 20mg tablets for $9.48; 3.) Lisinopril – 30 20mg tablets for $6.31; 4.) Levothyroxine – 90 60mg tablets for $25.12; 5.) Azithromycin – 6 250mg (z-pak) for $9.68; 6.) Metformin – 120 500mg tablets for $10.39; 7.) Lipitor – 30 40mg tablets for $8.25; 8.) Amlodipine – 30 10mg tablets for $6.86; 9.) Amoxicillin – 20 125mg tablets for $13.15; and, #10.) Hydrochlorothiazide –  30 25mg tablets for $4.48.

Check your insurer’s website to see how these costs compare.

(Ted and his wife however, are ‘away!)
